The Community Garden is situated in the North East corner of Lotherington Quarter: between Derwent Mews and the Route 66 cycle path. It is currently the only communal growing space at Derwenthorpe. Using a grant from Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, eight raised beds were constructed and plants and compost bought.
Since the Garden was established in 2013, interest from residents has waxed and waned. Initially there were 20 households but over the six years or so the number dwindled and the group almost folded in 2019. Following a relaunch consultation at the Food Festival in September 2019, a total of eleven residents have expressed interest, some from the original group, others newer to the estate. Nine have adopted seven out of the eight raised beds, either jointly or individually: an approach adopted to sustain interest in the Garden. There are plans to continue working at the Garden together.
